SouthWest Judo Academy athletes competed at the 2026 Mandurah Oceania Open and Cup on 2–3 May at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre.
The weekend brought opportunities for our Senior, Cadet and Junior athletes to test themselves against international opposition close to home.
At Saturday’s Senior Open, Danny Adamov recovered from a quarter-final loss to Argentina’s Ivan Ferreyra with a decisive ippon win over Alister Sukhamana of the Solomon Islands. He then faced Great Britain’s Kylan Aylward in the bronze-medal contest, finishing fifth.
Olivia Knights competed in Senior Women’s −57 kg, narrowly losing by yuko to New Zealand’s Siobhan Voyce in a contest that went the distance. She then faced Indonesia’s Febriany Dinny, finishing unplaced.
Representing Samoa, Georgia Aiesi faced Australia’s Anita Nourafshan in the Women’s −78 kg final. With both athletes having scored a yuko, Georgia sustained an injury and was unable to continue. We wish her well in her recovery.
Sunday saw our Cadet and Junior athletes take to the mat.
Kayla Nae claimed gold in both Cadet Women’s +70 kg and Junior Women’s +78 kg. Her victories over Sophia Commerford and Loloa Alaliane across the two divisions included swift ippon wins, securing an outstanding double-gold result.
Nate Stevens competed in Cadet Men’s −73 kg, opening against Roman Aizikov before progressing to a bronze-medal contest against Australia’s Kento Asano. Nate finished without a medal but gained valuable experience at international level.
Olivia returned for Junior Women’s −57 kg, facing Australia’s Oren Kelly and Hong Kong’s Wan Lok Lau. Despite strong efforts against both opponents, she finished unplaced.
Scott Fuerste contested Junior Men’s −73 kg, facing Enzo Kellou of New Caledonia in his opening contest and Singapore’s Chee Le Teo in the repechage. Scott finished unplaced, gaining further experience against international competitors.
We are proud of every SouthWest athlete who competed. Each contest offered lessons to bring back to training, alongside the opportunity to represent the club on an international stage.
Thank you to Sensei Shane and Sensei Jacob for supporting our athletes from the coaches’ boxes throughout the weekend.
