International exchange

Judo beyond Port Kennedy — training, travel and friendships across the world.

Japan exchange program

At SouthWest Judo Academy we believe in the transformative power of cultural exchange. Since 2009, club-led visits to Japan have given members the chance to immerse themselves in Japanese culture while deepening their connection to judo in its birthplace.

From training at the Kodokan and visiting prestigious school dojos to exploring landmarks and sharing time with host clubs, these journeys build technical skill, global perspective and lifelong memories. After a pause during the COVID-19 pandemic, we resumed exchange travel in 2023 and continue to support members who wish to take part when trips are offered.

WA–Japan Judo Exchange

Judo WA also runs the WA–Japan Judo Exchange Program, an official cultural and training exchange for selected Western Australian judoka. SouthWest members have represented the club and the state on this program, training in Japan alongside peers from across WA.

Selection, dates and applications are managed by Judo WA. Club events such as the Kodokan seminar may support pathway opportunities — ask your coach if you are interested in future exchanges.

Hosting & visiting athletes

Exchange is not only about travel abroad. We regularly welcome international teams and coaches for training on our mats — for example joint sessions before major Oceania events. These evenings are a unique chance for members to train with visiting judoka and experience different styles up close.

Stay in the loop

Exchange trips, seminars and hosting opportunities are announced through club communication, our events calendar and news. For expressions of interest, speak to a senior coach or email hello@southwestjudoacademy.com.au.
