SouthWest Judo Academy’s junior athletes enjoyed a successful day at the 2026 AIJ Open Tournament on Sunday, 5 July, hosted by the Australian Institute of Judo in Welshpool.
The team earned one gold, four silver and two bronze medals, with strong efforts across the beginner and intermediate divisions.
Luke Phillips won gold in the Under 9 Girls and Boys −27 kg beginner division.
Silver medals went to Florence Garner in the Under 9 Girls and Boys −38 kg beginner division, Quinn Goff in Under 11 Boys −30 kg intermediate, Carl Gassner in Under 11 Boys −42 kg intermediate, and Archer Goff in Under 13 Boys −45 kg intermediate.
Hauke Gassner claimed bronze in the Under 9 Boys −24 kg beginner division, while Jonas Modol Fickling earned bronze in Under 11 Boys −30 kg intermediate.
Congratulations to every SouthWest athlete who stepped onto the mat. Alongside the medal results, the tournament gave our young judoka an opportunity to put their training into practice, build confidence and learn from their contests. We were proud of the courage and team spirit they showed throughout the day.
Thank you to the Australian Institute of Judo for hosting the tournament, and to Sensei Jacob and Sensei Olivia for coaching and supporting our athletes.
